Sylvania SilverStar Ultra – Whitest Halogen Headlight Bulb

OVERALL BEST

Sylvania’s SilverStar headlight bulb upgrades brightness, has a wider field of view and most importantly, a Kelvin temperature that makes this one of the whitest bulbs available.

These features allow the SilverStar to offer better visibility, more clarity and a cooler look for your car’s front end.

Our testing took us through a number of different environments and situations, from well illuminated city centers to darker highways where streetlights were few and far between.

These bulbs did an excellent job, offering better downroad visibility than stock, thanks to a 27% increase in brightness.

Whiteness also benefitted quite a bit with this setup. In testing, we saw a 16% whiter light that is more precise and clearer when shone down the road.

The beam pattern was also more uniform and helped identify obstacles more easily. The same goes for pedestrians, wild animals and road signs, all of which were easy to see and avoid.

All the while, we did not experience any issues with heating up of the elements or flickering of light. This bulb is just as consistent as it is high performing, with a stable beam of light that does not face any interference with other components like the stereo system, and runs great even for extended use.

Finally, the wider field of view helped bring more of the roadside into view and provided superior peripheral visibility, essential for avoiding unexpected accidents.

Pros
  • 27% brighter than stock
  • 16% whiter
  • Wider field of view
  • Improves nighttime visibility
  • Better peripheral visibility
  • Available in different sizes for different vehicles
  • Easy to install
  • Intense beam of light
  • Whiter light than stock
  • Impressive cooling
  • Easy to install
Cons
  • Not as long lasting as some other bulbs
  • Instructions are not the easiest to follow

Optilux Hella XB Series Xenon White Halogen Bulbs

Best Budget
Whitest Halogen Headlight Bulb

If you’re comfortable sacrificing brightness to achieve a near OEM, white, xenon look, Philips Diamond Visions are the halogens for you.

In our testing, the Diamond Visions were almost half as bright as our stock bulbs, at 41% dimmer than the baseline. This is because Philips have gone for a more color and design focused approach with this set. If you want longer throw, and more downroad visibility, we can’t advocate the Philips.

However, if you want the perfect bulb to use as fog lights or DRLs, the Diamond Vision gets our highest recommendation. Coming in at a cool 5160k color temperature, these bulbs are an unprecedented 68% whiter than stock. That is the closest we’ve gotten to a true Xenon look with a pair of halogen bulbs.

This pure white color looks effortlessly cool on your car’s front end, when used as fog lights or DRLs. While it really isn’t the brightest, it is without a doubt one of the whitest and that definitely helps in improving visibility to some extent, especially when paired with a more powerful headlight that can fill in the gap.

But for what it is, the Diamond Vision works well. We did not encounter any overheating or flickering. These bulbs are stable and provide a uniform beam pattern that looks phenomenal during the day and at night.

Installing them was also a piece of cake, taking no more than 25 minutes and requiring no great technical savviness. An instructional video or two should suffice in helping you get started.

Pros
  • Better visibility
  • Compatible with most modern cars
  • Whiter light helps identify obstacles
  • Easy to install
  • Blue coating mimics Xenon style
  • 3x less expensive than competitors
  • Long lasting
  • Bright and intense light
  • Wide field of view
  • 4200k color temperature
Cons
  • Lack DOT approval
  • For off road use only

Hi, I'm Graeme, the author and owner of HeadlightReviews.com. Before I started this hobby site, I used to work alongside my 'Pops', helping out as he worked as a mechanic for over 50 years. Twenty-five of those he was running his own Auto Electrician & Body Shop, where I fell in love with vehicle lighting. I've taken all our experience online (that's not his gig)… so it’s safe to say there are very few people on the internet who can match our expertise and deep understanding of vehicle mechanics, repairs, parts, and especially headlights.
